CONNECTING THE REGIONS THROUGH CLEAN GROWTH:
Clustering and the Grand Challenges

Roundtable Event
14th March 2019

DragonGate’s central London event brought together some of the most eminent figures in government, research and industry to discuss the best ways Cumbria can respond to the Industrial Strategy’s Grand Challenge, enabling innovation and growth in the county.

OVERVIEW

Cumbria is an international centre of nuclear excellence. Since the stopping of energy production, the Sellafield site has attracted world-class expertise and skills in decommissioning and hazardous site management. It has done so partially out if its own skill-sets but also in developing a robust and comprehensive supply chain of activity. Travel down the coast of the county and you will find the world’s largest off-shore wind farm, employing new and emerging state-of-the-art technology to sustain itself and produce energy.

As HM Government’s publication of major strategic policy is designed to usher in greater productivity, address regional inequality, Cumbria has the opportunity to become the UK’s leading region of excellence for the Clean Growth Grand Challenge.

Around the table were leaders from government, industry, and academia, discussing and debating how best Cumbria can take on this once in a generation opportunity. The aim now is create a joint and shared action plan detailing how exactly the county can achieve this.
